In 2008 we visited Taiwan for the first time.  We flew on China Airlines from Fukuoka in Japan.  Our visit was mainly concentrated on the capital city of Taipei.

 


Here are 13 of the things we did in Taipei and the surrounding area


1 – Night Markets

We visited the famous night markets around the city including the largest one at Shinlin. It was a pretty interesting experience.

2 – Night Market Food

We sampled some of the food they have at the markets. It was truly a weird and wonderful mixture.

3 –  Taipei Station

We visited Taipei Station; the main hub of the railway system of Taiwan.

4 –  Visited Juifen

We took a train to nearby Juifen.  The little mountain resort has an interesting stepped street and is full of interesting shops.

5 – Drank Tea

We drank tea in a real Taiwanese tea shop.

6 –  Temples

We visited the famous old Lungshan temple in Taipei

7. Old Japanese Buildings

We toured the area where there are lots of old Japanese buildings. They are remnants of the time when Japan was the colonial power here.

8 –  Dumplings

We ate delicious dumplings at one of the most famous dumpling shops in the world; Din Tai Fung.

9 –  101 Taipei

We climbed to the top of Taiwan’s tallest building and learnt about the system of dampers they have to alleviate any potential damage during earthquakes.

10 – Food at Ye Shuen restaurant

We had amazing Taiwanese food at our favourite Taipei restaurant

11 – Ice with Mango

We refreshed ourselves with ice shavings covered with fresh mango.  It is  a local delicacy.

12 –  Markets

We toured the day markets. They were every bit as interesting as the more famous night ones.

13 – Museum

We visited the Museum of Taiwanese history.  It was an interesting journey into the past and included rebuilt streets, shops and old school classrooms.
