2004 – UK – “Royal Duchy to Scilly”

By train and helicopter to Scilly

In the summer of 2004 we made a journey by train and helicopter to the beautiful Isles of Scilly.

We took the 1335 Paddington “Royal Duchy” express to Penzance and then stayed overnight in a bed and breakfast .  The next morning we boarded a helicopter flight to Scilly.

The islands lay less than 40 miles west of Cornwall but they have a slightly different climate to the rest of the UK.   There are 5 inhabited islands and the total population is just 2,200.

We stayed on the largest island, St Mary’s, but made daily trips by boat to the other islands.   The beaches are strikingly beautiful and are not nearly as crowded as the rest of the West Country. Scilly is also famous for its flowers and is a major supplier of flowers to the rest of the UK.

We stayed on the islands for several days before returning to London with an overnight stop in St Ives.
