2011 – Vietnam – “Reunification Express”

Two trips to Vietnam

Apart from Japan, which probably has to be in a separate category by itself, I would say that Vietnam is my favourite Asian country.

At least I would say that the two visits I have made to Vietnam have been the most enjoyable of all my visits in Asia.   In my opinion it is a combination of the friendly people, interesting cities, beautiful scenery and outstanding food that make Vietnam such a great place to visit.

We first went to Vietnam in 2011 and returned in 2012 for another visit.

On the first trip we travelled via Shanghai and Hong Kong and took Cathay Pacific into and out of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).  After a few days there we flew up to Hanoi on Vietnamese Airlines and spent another few days in the capital.  We then took the “Reunification” express train down back to Saigon with overnight stops in Hue and Hoi an.

On the second trip we flew into Hanoi from Hong Kong on Cathay. We were hoping to visit Halong Bay. Unfortunately a typhoon led to a cancellation of our plans and we remained holed up in Hanoi instead.  We flew back down to Saigon and spent another few days there before heading out to Cambodia.
